Wrightsville Beach Park Hosts FREE Sunday Afternoon Jazz Concert!

Looking for an enjoyable "recession proof "way to spend a Sunday afternoon in the park? Come out Sunday for one our area's many free local  concerts! 

 

The Cape Fear Jazz Society  will present a terrific outdoor concert this weekend, sponsored by the Wrightsville Beach Department of Parks & Recreation at Wrightsville Beach Park! What a great opportunity to hear some of our awesome local Jazz groups while enjoying the Harbor Island breeze!

 

This years line-up kicks off with Grenoldo Frazier a Fats Waller style pianist and singer.  
Next up is the amazing Frank Bongiorno Trio, led by UNCW's renowned Jazz Studies professor on the Sax, Andy Whittington on piano and Doug Irving on bass.

Also on the bill, closing out the show will be The Port City All-Stars, led by El Jaye Johnson  on guitar and trumpet, Kevin Kolb on piano, Teddy Burgh on reeds, Tony Mallard on drums and Mike Hanson on percussion.

Refreshments will be available! Hot Dogs Ice Cream! Bring your chairs or blankets! and Picnics and Dogs are welcome!

Wrightsville Beach Hosts Free Concert! Bring Your Dancing Shoes!

Last chance to enjoy the FREE Sounds of Summer Concert series sposored by tv station WECT. News anchorman John Evans will host tonight's concert at Wrightsville Beach Park. 

It's a flip flop evening of "Beach" music by the local popular cover band Captain Cook & the Cocunuts. Fun for all ages!  It's been a sizzling hot summer week in the Wilmington NC  area and the heat is sure to continue tonight with some "hot" summer Rock n Roll!

Don't miss the last concert of the series tonight!

Bring chairs, blankets. Picniks and PETS are welcome!

Festivals, Flotilla and Fireworks Light Up Wrightsville Beach

 

logoThe 24th annual North Carolina Holiday Flotilla Weekend at Wrightsville Beach is  now in full swing.

The Tree Lighting Ceremony tonight at Wrightsville Beach Town Park kicked of a three day celebration on Harbor Island of Festival, Flotilla,and Fireworks. Miss North Carolina was a special guest at the Tree Lighting along with a contingent of US Marines representing Toys for Tots which is sposored this year by the Flotilla. Donation boxes for toys are set up at Wrightsville Beach Park Town Hall and the Blockade Runner for the duration of the festival.

On Saturday from 10-4pm, The Festival in The Park will offer fun for all ages with a Classic Car show, rides and games for children, Arts and Crafts, 80 vendors, and Refreshments, Shades of Grass will be the musical guests, and Chaz the Magician will wow the crowd.

 

Local TV anchors Jim Hanchett and Kim Ratcliff, Congressman Mike McIntyre, Mayor Bob Quinn and Publisher Pat Bradford will be judging the Flotilla entrants. Prizes will be awarded in different categories with the top prize being a week vacation to Paradise Island.

The Parade of Boats will begin at 6pm. The route runs from Motts Channel to Banks Channel, Masonboro Inlet and the Intracoastal. Boats of all shapes and sizes, private owners, commercial vessels are eligible to enter. Each year the number of entrants increase and the decorations get more elaborate and inventive. Last year's winner was a Pirates of the Caribbean theme.

New this year, residents will have a chance to win prizes by decorating their dock, deck, porch or yard along the parade route.  Prizes for the Light Up the Night Contest will be awarded by the Harbor Island Garden Club before the parade begins.

Following the parade of boats, the sky will light up over Banks Channel with a fireworks show!

The awards will be handed out on Sunday Morning at the Captains Brunch hosted by the Bluewater Grille  

Arrive early for best flotilla viewing and dress warm!

 

Wrightsville Beach NC: A Dog Day Celebration!

                                            Is  your Dog is into disc catching  Come on by the 2007 Skyhoundz Hyperflight Canine Disc Championships at Wrightsville Beach Park.

The event begins at 11am. Free entry but please come by the Wrightsville Beach Recreation Office to pre-register from 9:30-10:30 Saturday for more information, call 910.256.7925.

Following the Disc Championship the  the 2nd Annual Parade of Pooches hosted by WilmTV will take place. Free admission. Refreshments available

The dog show will run from 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 13.

This charity event also benefits the New Hanover Humane Society and last year raised more than $3,000 for the shelter. Pooch parents can enter their dogs in nine categories, for gift prizes from sponsors and gold medals for first-place winners:

 Dogs can enter two of the nine categories for a $15 donation.

 

Wrightsville Beach Hosts Surfing Championship

Surfs up this weekend (we hope) as Wrightsville Beach, NC will be host to the the 3rd Annual Reef / Sweetwater Pro Am Surf Fest on July 13-15 at Oceanic Street on Wrightsville Beach. This event is the second largest  Surfing Event on the East Coast. Surfers from all over the globe will be competing. The prizes for this year total $30,000. New this year will be a live web cast of the entire event and computerized scoring by Beachbyte.

Defending champion Aaron Cormican will be back once again. Pros to watch include past event champion Rob Machado, and local Ben Bourgeois,

Amateur divisions include Guys 15-up, Guys 14-under, Guys Open Longboard, Women 18-up, Girls17-under, Women's Open Longboard, and the crowd favorite Guppy division. 

Winners of each amateur division will win a brand new JS surfboard,  Every amateur finalists will also walk away with a great prize packages!
